Most local house shifts take one working day: roughly 4 to 6 hours for a 1BHK, 6 to 8 hours for a 2BHK and 8 to 10 hours for a 3BHK. That covers packing, loading, the drive, unloading and basic setup. The drive is the shortest part. Packing and stairs are what stretch the day.
Picture a 2BHK on a Saturday morning. The truck is at the gate at seven, the cartons were meant to be ready, and half the kitchen is still on the shelves. Nobody planned for that to happen, and it’s the most common way a one-day move turns into a long one.
Time on a local move is mostly decided before the truck arrives. This guide shows where the hours go, what slows a shift down, and how to plan so you finish the same day.
Packing and moving company in Thanjavur
Typical time by home size
| Stage | 1BHK | 2BHK | 3BHK |
|---|---|---|---|
| Packing | 1.5 to 2.5 hours | 3 to 4 hours | 4 to 5 hours |
| Loading | About 1 hour | 1 to 1.5 hours | 1.5 to 2 hours |
| The drive | 20 to 45 minutes | Up to 1 hour | Up to 1 hour |
| Unloading and placing | About 1 hour | 1 to 1.5 hours | 1.5 to 2 hours |
| Whole move | 4 to 6 hours | 6 to 8 hours | 8 to 10 hours |
The totals allow for short breaks and small delays, so they run a little longer than the stages added together. These are typical figures for a standard load. A home full of heavy furniture, glass or a lot of loose items will take longer.
Why the drive is the shortest part
Inside a town like Thanjavur or Kumbakonam, the drive between two houses is rarely more than half an hour. Packing is what takes the time, because every shelf, drawer and cupboard has to be emptied, wrapped and boxed. If most of that is done before the crew arrives, the whole day shrinks. If none of it is, the crew packs while the truck waits.
Loading comes next. It goes quickly when the vehicle can park at the door and slowly when it has to wait at the end of a lane.
What slows a local move down
- A lot of loose items that aren’t boxed yet.
- Fragile things, such as glass, crockery, electronics and framed pictures, which need slow, careful wrapping.
- Upper floors without a working lift.
- A narrow lane or a gate that stops the truck short of the door.
- A vehicle that’s too small, so the load needs two trips.
- Waiting for permission to enter an apartment, a lift booking or a security check.
What speeds it up
Declutter before you pack. Every item you give away or sell is one you don’t have to wrap, carry and unpack. Pack the things you use least first, and keep a single “last day” box for the kettle, chargers and bedding.
Tell us everything we should know. Floors, lifts, lane width, parking and any heavy items let us bring the right crew and the right vehicle. Surprises on the day are what cost time.
Time of day, weather and the calendar
Start early. Morning traffic is lighter, the heat is gentler, and you keep the whole afternoon in reserve if something runs over. A move that starts at noon has to fight the heat and, in the evening, the dark.
The rainy season matters too. During the northeast monsoon, from October to December, packing and loading slow down because everything needs plastic cover and the crew has to wait out the heavy spells. In summer, midday heat does the same to people. Plan around both.
Many families time a move around the griha pravesam muhurtham, often in the early morning. If that’s you, tell us the time when you book. We’ll plan the loading so the truck reaches the new house before the muhurtham, and the pooja items travel where you can get to them first.
Festival days and temple processions can also close streets. If your date is close to one, ask us about the route.
Floors, lifts and apartment rules
Floors change the time more than distance does. Carrying a wardrobe down three flights takes far longer than driving it across town. A working lift helps, but apartments often limit lifts to certain hours, ask for a service lift booking, or want a security check at the gate. Tell the association in advance, and tell us what they said.
Vehicle size and crew size
A vehicle that’s too small means two trips, and a second trip can add an hour or two. A crew that’s too small means the loading drags. We choose both from your inventory, so give us an honest list. If you’re not sure which vehicle suits your load, our guide to mini truck vs closed container explains the difference.
Can it be done in one day?
For most homes, yes. A 1BHK or a 2BHK with an early start and a ready-to-go load is a one-day job. A big 3BHK, a house with a lot of fragile items, an office, or a move that starts late may spill into a second morning. When that’s likely, we’ll say so in advance and suggest splitting it: pack and load one day, deliver and unpack the next.
Does unpacking count?
Unloading and placing the big items usually finishes the same day. Unpacking every carton and arranging the house takes longer and is usually done over the next few days. If you want us to unpack, say so when you book, so we can include it in the time.
Plan your day
- The night before: empty and defrost the fridge, drain the washing machine, and keep a bag with documents, medicines and chargers.
- Morning of: make sure the lanes and the gate are clear, and the lift is booked if you need it.
- During the move: stay on hand to point out which boxes go where.
- At the new house: check that the power and water are on, so the crew can place things without waiting.
Questions people ask
How long does house shifting take within the same city for a 2BHK?
Usually 6 to 8 hours, including packing, loading, the drive, unloading and basic setup.
Can a local shift be done on the same day?
Yes. Most are, with an early start and a load that’s mostly ready to go.
Does packing take longer than the drive?
Yes, by a long way. In a town the drive is often under half an hour, while packing a 2BHK takes three to four hours.
What causes delays?
Unpacked items, upper floors without a lift, narrow lanes, a vehicle that’s too small, and waiting for apartment permissions.
Is it faster to pack myself?
It can be, if you start days ahead and finish before the crew arrives. If packing is left to the last night, a trained crew is usually faster.
What’s the best time to start?
Early morning, ideally by seven or eight. You get lighter traffic, cooler weather and room to absorb a delay.
