Book a mini truck for a 1RK or a light 1BHK, for short local runs, and for lanes a bigger vehicle can’t enter. Book a closed container truck for a 2BHK or larger, for fridges, TVs and a lot of cartons, for anything beyond the local area, and for any move during the northeast monsoon. If you’re right on the line, take the closed truck.
A fridge tied on top of a Tata Ace under a tarpaulin, with the sky turning grey. That’s the picture we’d like to keep you out of. The opposite mistake is just as easy to make: a big truck booked for a small load, then parked at the end of a lane it can’t enter.
We’ve done house shifts both ways around Kumbakonam, Thanjavur and Mayiladuthurai, hundreds of them, and the choice rarely comes down to preference. It comes down to what’s in your rooms, how far you’re going, how wide your street is and what the weather is doing.
What a mini truck is, and what a closed container truck is
A mini truck is the small goods vehicle you see all over town: the Tata Ace (Chota Hathi), the Bolero pickup, the Ashok Leyland Dost. The deck on a Tata Ace is about 7 ft by 4 ft and it is rated for roughly 750 to 850 kg. Pickups with an 8 ft deck take 1 to 1.5 tonnes. Most have an open deck, so the load goes under a tarpaulin. A closed container truck has a metal body with a roof and a lockable door. In this trade the name doesn’t mean a shipping container on a trailer. It means a closed-body truck, which is why people also search for it as a closed body truck or a box truck. The small end is the Tata 407, rated around 2.5 tonnes. Above that come 14 ft, 17 ft and 19 ft closed bodies that carry a good deal more.

These are starting points. Count what’s inside the rooms, not just the rooms: a well-furnished 2BHK and a sparse one are very different loads. If you’re between two sizes, go up one. The extra space costs less than a second trip.
When a mini truck is enough
A mini truck makes sense when the load is small and the trip is short. Think of a 1RK, a studio or a bachelor’s room with one bed, a small almirah and a few cartons. It also suits moving just a fridge or a washing machine to a house nearby, or sending part of your belongings ahead before the main move.
It’s also the right call when the street decides for you. The older parts of Kumbakonam have lanes where a 17 ft truck simply can’t turn, and a Tata Ace gets to the door.
Where it stops working is the open deck and the small engine. Pile a 2BHK onto one and you’re overloading it, which is against the rules, and the load starts to shift at the first speed breaker. It is also built for local runs. Past the edge of town, dust and road vibration start to matter.
When you need a closed container truck
Go for the closed truck if any of these is true.
Your home is a 2BHK or bigger. Two beds, a sofa, a couple of almirahs, a fridge, a washing machine and fifty-odd cartons won’t fit in a Tata Ace however you stack them. Even where they’d technically go, an overloaded vehicle is a risk to your goods and to the road.
You’re moving things that can’t get wet or dusty. TVs, monitors, computers, mattresses, sofas. A tarpaulin copes with drizzle. It doesn’t cope with a proper downpour and wind pulling at the corners.
You’re carrying things that matter more than their weight: pooja items, antiques, glass, framed photographs. A closed, lockable body keeps them still and out of sight.
You’re going beyond the local area. Thanjavur and Mayiladuthurai are each about 40 km from Kumbakonam, Trichy is about 100 km and Chennai about 270 km. Over distances like that, an open load takes a beating from dust and hours of vibration, and a closed truck is the better fit for the highway. Narrow lanes, gates and the last stretch
Look at your street before you book anything, not just your inventory. Check the narrowest point of the lane, whether a truck can turn at the end, whether there are low wires or arches, and whether your apartment lets a heavy vehicle through the gate.
If the closed truck can’t reach your door, that isn’t a dead end. When the street needs it, we send a closed truck for the main load, park it on the nearest wide road, and use a mini truck for the final stretch. What it costs
A mini truck costs less to book than a closed truck. That part is simple. What people miss is what the cheaper booking can end up costing them.
Two trips in a mini truck can cost about as much as one run in a bigger vehicle, and you lose half a day. One soaked mattress, one cracked TV screen or one chipped antique costs more than the gap between the two bookings. The smaller vehicle is only cheaper when everything fits in one go and nothing gets damaged.
The price depends on the vehicle size, the distance, loading and unloading labour, the floor and whether there’s a lift, waiting time and tolls. When you compare quotes, compare like with like. Then we recommend the smallest vehicle that does the job safely, and we won’t let you book one that’s too small. If your load sits right between two sizes, we’ll tell you to go up one.
