When a family asks us how long their Kumbakonam to Chennai move will take the answer is never just about distance. It is about which route the truck takes, what the road condition is like on that route, how the traffic behaves at different times of day and whether the road is suitable for a fully loaded container truck.
There are three main routes from Kumbakonam to Chennai. We have used all three. Each has its advantages and its problems. Here is an honest breakdown of all three and why we consistently choose one above the others for loaded moving trucks.

The Distance and the Challenge
Kumbakonam to Chennai is approximately 300 to 320 kilometres depending on the route taken. For a car this is a four to five hour journey. For a fully loaded moving truck carrying furniture, appliances and carton boxes it is a five to six hour journey under good conditions.
The challenge with this route is that it connects a smaller town to a major metro. The roads leaving Kumbakonam are narrower than the highways. The entry into Chennai involves navigating heavy city traffic regardless of which route you take. And in between there are town centres, junctions and stretches where road quality varies significantly.
Choosing the right route is not about finding the shortest path. It is about finding the most reliable path for a heavy loaded vehicle.
Route 1 — Via Trichy and NH36
Distance: Approximately 320 kilometres Estimated truck travel time: 5.5 to 6 hours Road type: State highway to Trichy then National Highway NH36 to Chennai
This is the route we use most often for Kumbakonam to Chennai moves and for good reason.
From Kumbakonam the truck heads toward Thanjavur and then Trichy. At Trichy it joins NH36 which is a well maintained national highway running directly to Chennai. The road is wide enough for large container trucks throughout most of the route. The surface is consistent. There are proper fuel stops and rest areas along the way.
The Trichy bypass helps avoid the worst of Trichy city traffic. After Trichy the highway runs through Villupuram and then into Chennai from the south.
The main challenge with this route is the Trichy city stretch before the bypass junction and the Chennai entry through Tambaram which sees heavy traffic during peak hours. Starting before 7:00 AM from Kumbakonam means reaching the Trichy stretch before peak traffic and entering Chennai before the worst of the afternoon congestion.
This route is our first choice for all full home moves from Kumbakonam to Chennai.
Route 2 — Via Chidambaram and East Coast Road
Distance: Approximately 295 kilometres Estimated truck travel time: 6 to 7 hours Road type: State highways through coastal towns then ECR into Chennai
This is the shortest route on paper but consistently the slowest for moving trucks in practice.
From Kumbakonam this route goes northeast through Mayiladuthurai toward Chidambaram and then follows the coastal highway up toward Chennai via the East Coast Road. The coastal scenery is beautiful. The road is not always suitable for large trucks.
Several stretches between Mayiladuthurai and Chidambaram have narrow road widths where two large vehicles cannot pass each other comfortably. There are fishing town centres where the road narrows further and speed is reduced significantly. The ECR itself is good road but the sections before it add considerable time.
For cars and small vehicles this can be a scenic and reasonably fast route. For a fully loaded container truck it adds time and stress. We avoid this route for full home moves.
The one situation where we consider this route is for smaller loads using a mini truck when the destination in Chennai is in the north or central areas and the coastal approach makes geographical sense.
Route 3 — Via Thanjavur and Villupuram Directly
Distance: Approximately 310 kilometres Estimated truck travel time: 5.5 to 6.5 hours Road type: Mix of state highways and NH332
This route goes from Kumbakonam through Thanjavur, then north through Ariyalur and Villupuram before joining the highway into Chennai. It avoids Trichy entirely which some drivers prefer when Trichy traffic is known to be particularly heavy.
The road quality on this route is more variable than NH36. Some stretches between Thanjavur and Ariyalur have patches of poor road surface that make for an uncomfortable ride in a loaded truck. The route also passes through more town centres than the Trichy highway route which means more traffic signals and speed variations.
We use this route occasionally as an alternative when there is a known traffic event or road issue on the Trichy highway. It is a reasonable backup route but not our first choice.
Why Route 1 Wins Every Time for Moving Trucks
When you are moving a family’s complete household belongings in a closed container truck the priority is not finding the shortest route. The priority is finding the smoothest, most reliable and most truck-friendly route.
NH36 via Trichy delivers on all three counts. The road is wide. The surface is consistent. The route is predictable. We know exactly where the traffic builds up and we plan our departure time to avoid it. We know where the fuel stops are. We know the bypass roads around town centres.
Familiarity matters on a long distance move. A route we have driven hundreds of times with a loaded truck is always safer than a shorter route with unpredictable conditions.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does a moving truck take from Kumbakonam to Chennai? A fully loaded container truck takes approximately 5.5 to 6 hours from Kumbakonam to Chennai via the Trichy NH36 route under normal traffic conditions. Starting before 7:00 AM helps avoid peak hour delays at both ends.
Is the coastal route via ECR suitable for moving trucks? The ECR itself is good road but the approach roads through coastal towns before ECR have narrow stretches that are not ideal for large container trucks. We do not recommend this route for full home moves.
What time should a moving truck leave Kumbakonam for Chennai? Between 5:30 AM and 7:00 AM is ideal. This allows the truck to clear the Trichy stretch before morning traffic peaks and reach Chennai before afternoon congestion builds up.
