Relocating from a busy Chennai suburb like Tambaram to a quieter temple town like Kumbakonam is a significant life change. The distance is around 320 kilometres. The roads pass through multiple towns and highway stretches. And when you are moving a full family with years of accumulated belongings the logistics can feel overwhelming.

This is the complete story of one such move we handled recently. A family of four relocating from Tambaram to Kumbakonam. Here is every detail of how that day went.

About the Family and Their Home

The family consisted of two adults and two school-aged children. They were moving from a 2 BHK apartment in Tambaram to a larger independent house in Kumbakonam. The reason for the move was a job transfer for the husband combined with a desire to return closer to their hometown.

Their home in Tambaram contained:

  • Two double beds with storage
  • One children’s study table and chair
  • Two almirahs
  • One sofa set with centre table
  • One refrigerator
  • One washing machine
  • One television
  • One dining table with four chairs
  • Full kitchen contents
  • Children’s items including a cycle, books and toys
  • Pooja room items
  • Approximately 50 carton boxes of clothes and miscellaneous items

This was a full 2 BHK load requiring a closed container truck for safe long distance transport.

The Pre-Move Consultation

Since this was a long distance move from Chennai to Kumbakonam we had a detailed phone consultation with the family three days before moving day. We discussed the complete inventory, the new home layout and what the family could pack themselves in advance.

We advised them to pack all children’s items, books, clothes and kitchen dry goods into carton boxes before our team arrived. We also asked them to keep all important documents, medicines, jewellery and valuables separately in a bag they would carry with them personally — not in the moving truck.

The family followed every instruction carefully. This preparation made a significant difference on moving day.

Moving Day — Every Detail

5:00 AM — Team Arrives at Tambaram

Our five member team arrived at the Tambaram apartment at 5:00 AM. Starting this early was essential for a 320 kilometre move. We needed to reach Kumbakonam before evening to allow enough time for unloading and basic setup.

The family was ready. Around 30 carton boxes were already packed and stacked near the door. The children were still sleeping — the parents had wisely arranged for the children to sleep through the early packing hours.

5:00 AM to 6:30 AM — Packing Remaining Items

Our team packed the remaining items in 90 minutes. The pooja room items were packed first with individual bubble wrap for each idol and brass item. Kitchen glassware and breakables came next. The TV was removed carefully and wrapped in multiple layers. The washing machine drum was secured internally. The refrigerator was cleaned, defrosted and prepared for transport.

6:30 AM to 8:00 AM — Loading

Loading took 90 minutes and followed a strict sequence. The refrigerator and washing machine went in first against the truck walls. The almirahs and bed frames went in next. The sofa and dining table filled the middle section. Carton boxes were stacked on top with heavier boxes at the bottom and lighter ones above. The children’s cycle was secured at the back. Everything was covered with moving blankets and tied with ropes inside the container.

8:00 AM — Truck Departs Tambaram

The truck left Tambaram at 8:00 AM taking the NH36 route toward Trichy and then down to Kumbakonam. This is our standard route for Tambaram to Kumbakonam moves. The road is well maintained and suitable for loaded container trucks throughout.

8:00 AM to 1:30 PM — On the Road

The journey took five and a half hours with one scheduled stop near Villupuram for fuel and a short break. The road was clear for most of the journey. There was some slow traffic near Trichy city but the bypass road helped us avoid the worst of it.

The family travelled separately by car and arrived in Kumbakonam slightly ahead of the truck.

1:30 PM — Truck Arrives in Kumbakonam

The truck arrived at the new house in Kumbakonam at 1:30 PM. The independent house had a ground floor entrance with direct access — no lift needed, no narrow staircase. This made unloading considerably easier than an apartment move would have been.

1:30 PM to 3:30 PM — Unloading and Room Setup

Unloading took two hours. Each item was carried directly into the room it belonged to based on the labelling system used during packing. The large furniture was positioned as directed by the family. The beds were reassembled. The washing machine and refrigerator were placed in their designated spots. The pooja items were unpacked last and handed directly to the lady of the house.

The children’s items including the cycle, books and toys were placed in the children’s room. The family had a basic layout plan ready for the new house which made room-wise arrangement fast.

3:30 PM — Move Complete

The entire move was completed by 3:30 PM. The family had a fully functional home — beds assembled, kitchen items in place, pooja room set up — before evening.

What Made This Move Smooth

Four things stood out about this particular move. The family had pre-packed a large number of boxes themselves which saved nearly an hour of packing time. The early 5:00 AM start gave us enough road time to reach Kumbakonam comfortably before evening. The new house had easy ground floor access which made unloading faster. And the family had a clear layout plan ready for the new home so no time was wasted deciding where things go during unloading.

Long distance moves are always a full day effort. But with the right preparation they do not have to be stressful.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a move from Tambaram to Kumbakonam take? A full 2 BHK move from Tambaram to Kumbakonam typically takes 10 to 11 hours including packing, loading, travel and unloading. Starting early at 5:00 AM allows the move to be completed comfortably before evening.

Which route is used for Tambaram to Kumbakonam moves? We use the NH36 route through Villupuram and Trichy. This is the most reliable highway route for loaded container trucks covering this distance.

Should I travel with the moving truck or separately? We recommend travelling separately by car or train. The moving truck makes scheduled stops and moves at a slower pace than a car. Travelling separately means you arrive at the destination refreshed and ready to guide the unloading team.

What should I keep with me and not put in the moving truck? Always keep documents, jewellery, medicines, laptops, chargers and any irreplaceable items with you personally. These should never travel in the moving truck.

Is a closed container truck necessary for Tambaram to Kumbakonam? Yes. For a long distance move of over 300 kilometres a closed container truck is essential. It protects your belongings from dust, rain and road vibrations throughout the five to six hour journey.
