When a family books a moving service, they almost always brace themselves for delays. They expect the packers to arrive late. They expect the loading to take longer than quoted. They expect traffic to slow everything down. They expect to be settling into their new home well after midnight.

This is not an unreasonable expectation. Most moves do run late. Not because movers are careless, but because most moves are not planned carefully enough in advance.

This particular move from Thanjavur to Trichy was different. The customer had booked us expecting a full day of work. We finished two hours earlier than they anticipated. Here is exactly what happened and why it worked so well.

About This Move

This was a 3 BHK home in Thanjavur being relocated to a new residence in Trichy. The distance between the two cities is approximately 55 kilometres. On paper this sounds like a short move. But a 3 BHK with full furniture, appliances and years of accumulated belongings is never truly a short move regardless of distance.

The home contained:

  • Two double beds with storage drawers
  • One single bed
  • Three almirahs
  • One sofa set with centre table and side tables
  • One refrigerator
  • One washing machine
  • One television with wall mount
  • One dining table with six chairs
  • Full kitchen contents including a gas stove, vessels and packed dry goods
  • Pooja room items including a wooden shelf, brass lamps and idols
  • Approximately 55 carton boxes of clothes, books, children’s items and miscellaneous belongings

For this load we used a medium sized closed container truck. It was the right choice — large enough to fit everything in a single trip without overpacking.

Why Most Moves Run Late

Before explaining what we did differently, it helps to understand why moves typically take longer than expected.

The most common reason is that packing starts on moving day itself. When packers arrive and the home is still fully unpacked, the first two to three hours are spent just on packing carton boxes. This pushes loading back. Loading being pushed back pushes departure back. And departure being pushed back pushes arrival and unloading back.

The second common reason is poor loading sequence. When items are loaded without a plan, the truck has to be partially unloaded and repacked mid-way to fit everything. This happens more often than customers realise.

The third reason is no advance coordination at the destination. When the team arrives at the new home and nobody is ready — lift not arranged, parking not cleared, rooms not decided — unloading takes twice as long as it should.

All three of these problems are avoidable. And avoiding them is exactly what made this Thanjavur to Trichy move finish two hours ahead of schedule.

What We Did Differently

Pre-Move Visit Two Days Before

We visited the Thanjavur home two days before the move. During this visit we counted every item, measured the large furniture pieces and planned the loading sequence in advance. We also identified which items needed disassembly — the wall-mounted TV bracket, the bed frames and two almirah shelves.

We gave the customer a specific list of what they could pack themselves before moving day — kitchen dry goods, clothes, books and children’s toys. This alone reduced the packing time on moving day by nearly one hour.

Early Start at 5:00 AM

We agreed with the customer on a 5:00 AM start. This was earlier than they expected but we explained the reason clearly. The Thanjavur to Trichy route passes through several town centres where morning traffic builds up quickly after 8:00 AM. Starting at 5:00 AM meant we would complete loading and be on the road before the traffic built up.

The customer agreed and made sure the household was ready by 5:00 AM.

Packing Sequence on Moving Day

When our team arrived at 5:00 AM the customer had already packed around 20 carton boxes as we had advised. Our team immediately began packing the remaining items in a specific sequence.

Pooja room items were packed first — wrapped individually in bubble wrap and placed in a dedicated box marked fragile and this side up. Kitchen glassware and breakables came next. Then the TV was carefully removed from its wall mount and wrapped in multiple layers. Then the remaining clothes and soft items were packed quickly.

This sequenced approach meant nothing was left scrambling at the last minute.

Loading Sequence Inside the Truck

Loading followed a strict plan we had decided during our pre-move visit. The refrigerator and washing machine went in first against the back wall of the truck. The almirahs went in next on either side. The bed frames and dismantled parts went flat against one wall. The sofa was positioned in the remaining space. Carton boxes were stacked systematically — heavy at the bottom, fragile on top. Everything was covered with moving blankets and secured with ropes.

The entire loading process took one hour and forty minutes. For a 3 BHK this is fast. It was fast because we knew exactly where every item was going before we started.

Route Selection

The direct route from Thanjavur to Trichy via the main highway is straightforward but passes through Thanjavur town centre and several busy junctions. We took the bypass roads around the town centre on both the Thanjavur exit and the Trichy entry to avoid traffic signal delays.

This small route adjustment saved approximately 25 minutes compared to the direct through-town route.

Advance Coordination at Destination

Two days before the move we had confirmed the following with the customer about their new Trichy home — which floor the new home was on, whether there was a lift, the lift dimensions, where the truck could park without blocking the building entrance and which room each item was going into.

On moving day the customer had already informed their new building security about the moving truck. The parking spot was clear. The lift was available. Each room was labelled with a simple paper note — bedroom one, bedroom two, kitchen, living room.

Unloading was fast and systematic because nothing needed to be decided on the spot.

The Timeline on Moving Day

5:00 AM — Team arrives at Thanjavur home 5:00 AM to 7:00 AM — Packing of remaining items 7:00 AM to 8:40 AM — Loading into truck 8:40 AM — Truck departs Thanjavur 9:40 AM — Truck arrives at Trichy destination 9:40 AM to 11:30 AM — Unloading and room-wise arrangement 11:30 AM — Move complete

The customer had mentally prepared for a 1:30 PM or 2:00 PM finish. When we handed over the last box at 11:30 AM they were visibly surprised. They had the rest of the day to settle in, arrange their home and rest.

What the Customer Said

The customer told us afterwards that the thing that surprised them most was not the speed but how calm the entire process felt. There was no rushing, no confusion, no items being left behind, no last-minute panic. Everything had already been decided before moving day so moving day itself felt almost effortless.

That is exactly what good planning produces — not just speed but calm.

Key Lessons From This Move

A short distance move is not automatically a fast move. A 3 BHK moving 55 kilometres still takes the same effort as packing, loading and unloading a 3 BHK anywhere. Distance affects travel time. Planning affects everything else.

The two hours we saved on this move did not come from working faster. They came from working smarter — pre-packing, pre-planning the loading sequence, starting early and coordinating the destination in advance.

These are habits our team follows on every move. They cost nothing extra. They just require thinking ahead.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a move from Thanjavur to Trichy take? A 3 BHK move from Thanjavur to Trichy typically takes between 6 and 8 hours including packing, loading, travel and unloading. With good advance preparation this can be reduced significantly. The road journey itself is approximately 1 to 1.5 hours depending on traffic and route.

What is the best time to start a move from Thanjavur to Trichy? Starting between 5:00 AM and 6:00 AM is ideal. This allows you to complete loading before the morning town traffic builds up and arrive at the destination with enough time for unloading and setup during daylight hours.

Should I pack some boxes myself before the movers arrive? Yes, absolutely. Packing kitchen dry goods, clothes, books and children’s items yourself the day before significantly reduces packing time on moving day. Your movers can then focus on fragile and difficult items that need professional packing.

How do movers handle a wall-mounted TV during relocation? The TV is carefully removed from its wall bracket. The bracket, screws and mounting hardware are stored in a labelled zip-lock bag. The TV itself is wrapped in bubble wrap and placed in a protective carton or between moving blankets inside the truck in an upright or flat position based on the model.

Is a closed container truck necessary for a short distance move like Thanjavur to Trichy? For a full 3 BHK load a closed container truck is recommended even for short distances. It protects your goods from dust and keeps everything secured during the journey. For very small loads a mini truck may be sufficient but for complete home relocations a container provides better protection and space.
