Moving a full home from Kumbakonam to Chennai is not a small task. The distance alone is over 300 kilometres. Add to that a full set of furniture, appliances, packed boxes, and a family waiting at the other end — and you understand why most people feel anxious weeks before moving day even arrives.

We have done this route many times. But one particular 2 BHK move stands out — not because it was the biggest or the most complicated, but because everything went exactly right. The family was settled in their new Chennai home before dinner time. No damage. No delays. No confusion.

Here is exactly how we did it — and what made it work.

What the Home Contained

This was a standard 2 BHK in Kumbakonam with two bedrooms, one living room, one kitchen and a small pooja room. The inventory included:

  • One double bed with storage
  • One single bed
  • Two almirahs
  • One sofa set with centre table
  • One refrigerator
  • One washing machine
  • One television with stand
  • One dining table with four chairs
  • Kitchen items including vessels, appliances and packed groceries
  • Pooja items including brass lamps and small idols
  • Approximately 40 packed carton boxes of clothes, books and miscellaneous items

This is a typical 2 BHK load. Not too heavy, not too light. The right vehicle for this was a closed container truck — which protects everything from dust and rain during a long distance move.

The Night Before — How We Pre-Planned

Most moving problems happen because of poor planning the day before. Our team visited the home one day in advance to assess the layout, count the items and plan the packing sequence.

Here is what we decided that evening:

The pooja room items would be packed first and separately in a dedicated box with extra cushioning. The kitchen items would be packed into carton boxes the night before by the family to save time on moving day. The large furniture would be disassembled where needed — the double bed frame and the almirah shelves. The washing machine drum would be secured with drum bolts to prevent internal damage during transport. The refrigerator would be kept upright throughout and not tilted during loading.

This one evening of planning saved at least 90 minutes on moving day.

Moving Day — Hour by Hour

5:30 AM — Team Arrives Our four-member team arrived at the home at 5:30 in the morning. Starting early was a deliberate choice. Kumbakonam to Chennai via NH36 sees heavy vehicle traffic after 8 AM. Starting early meant we would clear the busiest stretches before rush hour.

5:30 AM to 7:00 AM — Packing The first 90 minutes were spent on packing. Fragile items like the TV, glassware and brass idols were wrapped in bubble wrap and placed in clearly labelled boxes. The refrigerator was cleaned out and secured. The washing machine was bolted internally. Furniture that needed disassembly was taken apart carefully with all screws and bolts kept in labelled zip-lock bags.

7:00 AM to 8:30 AM — Loading Loading followed a specific sequence. Heavy items like the refrigerator, washing machine and almirahs went in first against the truck walls. Furniture like the sofa and beds came next. Carton boxes were stacked on top based on weight — heavier boxes at the bottom, lighter ones on top. Fragile boxes were placed where they would not shift during the journey. The entire load was covered with moving blankets and secured with ropes inside the container.

8:30 AM — Truck Departs Kumbakonam The truck left Kumbakonam at 8:30 AM taking the NH36 route through Trichy. This is our preferred route for Chennai moves because the road condition is consistently better and the highway is wider for large vehicles.

8:30 AM to 12:30 PM — On the Road The 310 kilometre journey took exactly four hours. We avoided the Trichy city centre by taking the bypass. The driver made one scheduled stop for fuel and a short break near Villupuram. No diversions, no breakdowns, no surprises.

12:30 PM — Truck Arrives in Chennai The truck reached the destination in Porur, Chennai at 12:30 PM. The building had a lift large enough for most furniture. Our team coordinated with the building security on arrival.

12:30 PM to 2:30 PM — Unloading and Setup Unloading took two hours. Each item was carried to the correct room based on the labelling system we used during packing. The furniture was reassembled in each room. The washing machine and refrigerator were positioned and connected. The pooja items were unpacked last and handed directly to the family.

2:30 PM — Move Complete The entire move from start to finish took exactly nine hours including travel — six hours of actual work on both ends and four hours of driving. The family was fully settled before evening.

The Route We Used and Why

We took NH36 from Kumbakonam through Thanjavur, Trichy and Villupuram before joining the Chennai bypass. This is not always the shortest route on paper but it is the most reliable one for large trucks.

The coastal route via Nagapattinam is shorter in distance but the road narrows in several stretches and is not suitable for a fully loaded container truck. The Trichy route gives us wider lanes, better road surface and more predictable traffic throughout the day.

What the Customer Was Worried About

Before the move the family had three main concerns. First, they were worried about the brass idols and antique lamps from their pooja room getting damaged. Second, they were worried about the refrigerator because they had heard stories about compressor damage during long distance moves. Third, they wanted everything to reach before evening so they could sleep in a set-up home that night.

All three concerns were addressed directly in our planning. The pooja items got dedicated bubble wrap packing and a separate marked box. The refrigerator was transported upright with no tilting at any point. And the early start time meant we reached Chennai well before evening.

What Made This Move Work

Looking back, five things made this move go smoothly:

One — the pre-move visit the evening before. Knowing the exact inventory and layout meant zero surprises on moving day.

Two — the early start. Leaving Kumbakonam at 8:30 AM meant clearing the busy highway stretches before peak traffic.

Three — the packing sequence. Fragile items were packed first and separately. Nothing fragile was buried under heavy boxes.

Four — the loading order. Heavy items anchored the truck walls. Light and fragile items were on top. Everything was secured with ropes and blankets.

Five — clear labelling. Every box had the room name and contents written on it. Unloading in Chennai was fast because nothing needed to be opened and checked.

None of these are complicated. But together they turn a stressful moving day into a smooth one.

Key Lesson From This Move

Planning the evening before saves more time than rushing on the day itself. Most moving delays happen in the first two hours — during packing and loading — not on the road. If those two hours are well-organised, the rest of the move takes care of itself.

A 2 BHK move from Kumbakonam to Chennai does not have to be a stressful two-day process. With the right team, the right vehicle and a solid plan, it can be done in a single day — comfortably.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a 2 BHK move from Kumbakonam to Chennai take? With proper planning and an early start, a 2 BHK move from Kumbakonam to Chennai can be completed in a single day. Packing and loading takes around 3 hours, the road journey takes 4 to 5 hours depending on traffic, and unloading and setup takes around 2 hours.

Which route is best for moving from Kumbakonam to Chennai? We recommend the NH36 route through Trichy and Villupuram for large trucks. It has better road surface and wider lanes compared to the coastal route. Travel time is approximately 4 to 5 hours for a loaded truck.

What type of truck is needed for a 2 BHK move from Kumbakonam to Chennai? A closed container truck is ideal for long distance moves like Kumbakonam to Chennai. It protects your belongings from dust, rain and road vibrations throughout the journey. A mini truck may not have enough space for a full 2 BHK load including all furniture and appliances.

Do I need to be present during the entire move? It is helpful to be present during packing and at the destination during unloading. This allows you to guide the team on fragile items and confirm that everything reaches the right room. However, you do not need to travel in the truck.

How should I prepare for a long distance move from Kumbakonam to Chennai? Pack your kitchen items the night before. Keep documents, valuables and medicines with you separately. Confirm the destination address and building access details in advance. Inform your building security on both ends about the moving truck.
