Every family worries about damage when they hire packers and movers. They wrap their most precious items carefully, point out fragile boxes repeatedly and watch nervously as their belongings are loaded into the truck.
But in our experience the items that actually break during a move are rarely the ones families worry about most. After completing over 300 home shifts across Kumbakonam, Thanjavur, Mayiladuthurai and surrounding areas we have seen clear and consistent patterns in what breaks, why it breaks and how it can be prevented.

Why Damage Happens at All
Before listing what breaks it helps to understand when damage actually occurs during a move. Most people assume damage happens during transport — the truck hitting a pothole or items shifting on the road. In reality transport accounts for a minority of damage cases.
The three moments where damage happens most are during packing when items are wrapped inadequately, during loading when items are placed incorrectly inside the truck and during unloading when items are rushed out of the truck at the destination.
Transport damage is real but it is the least common cause when packing and loading are done correctly. This is important because it means most damage is preventable with the right technique at the right moment.
What Breaks Most — In Order
Number One — Glass Items
Drinking glasses, glass bowls, glass serving dishes and decorative glass pieces are the most frequently broken category in any home move. They are small, numerous and almost always packed in a rush.
The damage pattern is consistent. Multiple glasses placed together in a carton without individual wrapping, the carton placed at the bottom of a stack with heavier boxes on top and the glasses crack or shatter from the combined pressure and vibration during transit.
Every glass item without exception needs individual wrapping. Not two glasses sharing one piece of newspaper. Each glass wrapped separately, placed in a carton with crumpled paper filling all gaps and the carton marked fragile and never placed under heavy boxes.
Number Two — Ceramic and Porcelain Items
Plates, bowls, decorative ceramic pieces and porcelain items follow the same damage pattern as glass but with one additional risk — chipping at the edges and rims. Ceramic does not always shatter completely. It chips. And a chipped rim on a decorative plate or a family heirloom bowl is damage that cannot be repaired.
The fix is the same as for glass — individual wrapping with particular attention to rims and edges. We add an extra layer of wrapping at the rim of every ceramic plate and bowl before packing.
Number Three — Television Screens
Television screens are large, thin and expensive to replace. The damage pattern we see most often is pressure cracking — hairline cracks across the screen that appear when the TV is switched on after the move.
This damage comes from two causes. The TV being placed flat during transport with items stacked on top of it or the TV being wrapped in insufficient layers with the screen making direct contact with a hard surface inside the truck.
Every television must travel upright or near upright. Multiple layers of bubble wrap. Nothing placed on top. Nothing pressed against the screen surface.
Number Four — Wooden Furniture Surfaces
Wooden beds, dining tables, chairs and cabinets rarely break structurally during a move. What happens is surface damage — scratches, scuffs and gouges from contact with other items or with the metal interior of the truck.
This damage is entirely preventable with moving blankets. Every piece of wooden furniture wrapped in a moving blanket before loading arrives without surface damage. Every piece loaded without wrapping arrives with at least minor scratching.
We wrap every piece of wooden furniture on every move without exception. It takes five extra minutes per piece. It prevents damage that is visible every day in the new home.
Number Five — Decorative Items and Show Pieces
Decorative items — figurines, show pieces, framed photographs and wall hangings — are frequently damaged not because they were packed badly but because they were packed last when time was running short.
By the time packers reach the decorative items in a home the cartons are often full, the bubble wrap is running low and the pressure to finish loading is building. Items that deserve careful individual wrapping end up grouped together in a half-filled carton with minimal padding.
We always pack decorative items and show pieces early in the packing sequence — not last. This ensures they receive proper attention and adequate packing material before the time pressure builds.
The Moment Damage Happens Most
Of all the moments in a move — packing, loading, transit and unloading — unloading produces the most damage in our observation.
Here is why. By the time the truck arrives at the destination the team has been working for several hours. Energy levels are lower. The pressure to finish quickly is at its highest. Items are carried out of the truck faster than they were carried in. Cartons are stacked quickly without checking what is underneath.
This is when the glass carton gets placed under a heavy box. This is when the television gets leaned against the wall at the wrong angle. This is when the decorative item carton gets dropped because someone was moving too quickly.
We maintain the same careful pace during unloading as during loading. Fragile cartons are unloaded first and placed safely out of the way before heavy items come out. The pace does not increase just because the destination has been reached.
Frequently Asked Questions
What should I do if something breaks during my move? Document the damage immediately with photographs before moving or unpacking the item further. Note the damage in the presence of the moving team. Contact the moving company the same day with your documentation.
How can I reduce the risk of damage during my home shift? Pack glass and ceramic items individually with adequate wrapping. Ensure your television travels upright with nothing on top. Have all wooden furniture wrapped in moving blankets. Do not rush the unloading process.
Are packers and movers responsible for items damaged during a move? Responsibility depends on whether the damage resulted from improper handling by the moving team or from pre-existing fragility in the item. Document your valuable items before the move begins so any damage is clearly identifiable.
