Every move looks straightforward on paper. A team arrives, packs everything, loads the truck and delivers it to the new location. Simple.

But anyone who has moved even once knows the reality is different. Something almost always goes wrong. The question is whether that something is minor and forgettable or major and costly.

After handling over 500 relocations across Kumbakonam, Thanjavur, Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam and surrounding areas we have seen every type of problem a move can produce. Here is an honest account of when things go wrong most and what we do to prevent it.

Problem 1 — Poor Packing of Appliances

This is the single most common cause of damage during a move. Refrigerators, washing machines and televisions are the most frequently damaged items and in almost every case the damage was caused by incorrect packing not by rough handling during transport.

The most common mistake is transporting a washing machine without securing the drum internally. During transit the drum moves freely and the movement causes internal damage that only becomes visible when the machine is used after the move.

Refrigerators are often tilted during loading which can damage the compressor. Televisions are sometimes wrapped only in a single layer of bubble wrap which is not sufficient for long distance transport.

The fix is straightforward. Washing machine drums must be secured with drum bolts before loading. Refrigerators must remain upright throughout. Televisions need multiple layers of wrapping and a dedicated carton.

Problem 2 — Wrong Vehicle Size

Choosing the wrong truck size causes two types of problems. Too small and the load cannot fit in one trip — meaning a second trip, more time and more handling of your goods. Too large and items shift around inside the truck during transit because there is not enough load to fill the space and keep everything stable.

We see this mistake most often when customers book vehicles themselves without consulting a professional. A 2 BHK home seems like it should fit in a mini truck. Sometimes it does. Often it does not — especially when you account for a full kitchen, a sofa set, two almirahs and all the carton boxes.

The right vehicle depends on the actual inventory not just the number of bedrooms. A proper assessment before booking prevents this problem entirely.

Problem 3 — Moving During Peak Traffic Hours

The Thanjavur belt has specific traffic patterns that most people do not account for when planning a move. The main roads through Kumbakonam town centre, the Thanjavur bypass junction and the Trichy entry point all see heavy congestion between 8:30 AM and 10:30 AM and again between 5:00 PM and 7:30 PM.

A loaded truck caught in peak hour traffic does not just lose time. The repeated stopping and starting on uneven road surfaces causes more vibration and movement of goods inside the truck than a smooth highway drive does.

Starting moves before 6:00 AM eliminates this problem on most routes in this region.

Problem 4 — No Pre-Move Checklist

Moves that happen without a checklist almost always result in something being left behind. It is never the big items — nobody forgets the refrigerator. It is always the small things. The items on top of the kitchen cabinet. The things stored under the bed. The items in the back of the balcony. The documents kept in a drawer that was not opened during packing.

We use a room by room checklist on every move. Before the truck leaves we do a complete walkthrough of every room, every cabinet, every storage space. This takes fifteen minutes and has saved customers from leaving behind items countless times.

Problem 5 — Not Disconnecting Appliances the Night Before

This is a time problem more than a damage problem. When our team arrives and the refrigerator is still running and full of food, the washing machine still has water in it and the geyser is still connected — the move is already delayed before it starts.

Refrigerators need to be switched off and defrosted at least eight hours before moving. Washing machines need to be drained and the drum secured. Geysers need to be drained and disconnected. Gas connections need to be properly closed and the cylinder secured.

We remind every customer about this during our pre-move consultation. The ones who follow this advice start their moving day an hour ahead of those who do not.

Problem 6 — No Coordination at the Destination

Moves that go smoothly at the origin end often hit problems at the destination. The building lift is too small for the almirah. There is no parking spot for the truck near the entrance. Nobody is present at the new home to guide the unloading team on which item goes in which room.

Every one of these problems adds time and frustration to a move that was otherwise going well.

We ask every customer to confirm lift dimensions, parking access and room layout at the destination before moving day. Five minutes of advance coordination prevents one hour of confusion on the day.

Problem 7 — Last Minute Additional Items

This happens on almost every move. The truck is loaded, everything is secured and then the customer points to something that was not part of the original plan. A large potted plant. An extra cabinet in a storeroom. A heavy exercise machine that was somehow not mentioned.

Adding large items after loading is complete means partially unloading the truck, repositioning the new item properly and reloading everything. This can add 45 minutes to an hour to the move.

The solution is a complete inventory discussion before moving day with no surprises on the day itself.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the most common item damaged during a move? Washing machines are the most frequently damaged appliance during moves when the drum is not secured before transport. Televisions are the second most common due to insufficient wrapping.

How do I avoid items being left behind during a move? Do a complete room by room walkthrough with your moving team before the truck leaves. Check every cabinet, drawer, storage space and balcony. Do not rely on memory alone.

When is the worst time to move in the Kumbakonam and Thanjavur area? Peak traffic hours between 8:30 AM and 10:30 AM and festival days when town centre roads are blocked are the worst times to move in this region. Early morning starts before 6:00 AM work best.
